When we teach new skills, it’s easy to focus on the end goal.

But progress rarely looks like one big leap.

More often, it looks like:
🌱 one small step
🌱 lots of practice
🌱 a little more confidence
🌱 another small step

Learning a new skill doesn’t happen overnight. Children often need opportunities to try, make mistakes, receive support, and practice again before independence develops.

If progress feels slow, that doesn’t mean it isn’t happening.

Small steps are still steps. 🤍

You do not need to do everything at once.

Choose one skill.
Start small.
Keep going.

One of the biggest mistakes adults make when teaching new skills?
Expecting independence before enough practice.

Think about how we learn any new skill:
✔️ Someone shows us what to do
✔️ We get support along the way
✔️ We practice repeatedly
✔️ We receive encouragement when we’re trying

Children are no different.

Independence isn’t usually something that happens overnight. It’s built gradually through opportunities to learn, practice, make mistakes, and try again.

If a child is struggling with a skill, it doesn’t necessarily mean they won’t do it independently. It may simply mean they need more teaching, more support, or more practice first. 🤍

Small steps. Consistent opportunities. Confidence built over time.

“Brush your teeth” might sound like one simple instruction… but it’s actually made up of LOTS of smaller skills.

For many children, breaking big tasks into smaller, teachable steps can make learning feel:
✨ clearer
✨ more manageable
✨ less overwhelming
✨ more successful

Sometimes independence doesn’t come from expecting more — it comes from teaching in smaller pieces and building confidence step by step. 🤍

This is one of the strategies we’ll be talking about in our upcoming FREE parent workshop:
📅 June 13, 2026
⏰ 10:00 AM EST
💻 Live on Zoom
🎥 Recording provided if you can’t attend live

We’ll cover practical ways to:
✔️ teach everyday skills at home
✔️ support without over-helping
✔️ build independence over time
✔️ make learning fit into real life routines
