In the words of Jean Craighead George:
“Ask nature questions, and you will get answers.”
Life is full of questions. Some are small and practical, like what to eat for breakfast, while others are profound, like which path will lead us to fulfillment. Yet, the secret to navigating these questions often lies not in rushing toward answers, but in learning to ask the right ones. I find that my process of reflection, of pausing to consider my direction, can illuminate the choices I face and help me align my actions with my deepest values. Nature has a unique way of teaching us this lesson. George gifted us with the thought to ask nature questions, and you will get answers. A tree does not force its branches to grow in a particular direction; it follows the rhythm of sunlight, the pull of gravity, and the flow of water in the soil. Likewise, the rivers carve their paths not through resistance but by flowing around obstacles, adjusting gradually yet persistently toward their destination. Observing these patterns encourages us to consider our own life choices carefully. Instead of forcing outcomes, we can seek a harmonious direction that aligns with our natural strengths, passions, and circumstances. Good questions are the compass in this process. “What truly matters to me?” “What brings me energy instead of draining it?” “Am I choosing this path because it resonates with my values or because it feels expected?” By asking questions like these, we open the door to insights that guide us toward meaningful decisions. Answers often come when we are willing to listen deeply to ourselves, to the world around us, and to the quiet voice of intuition. Consideration, both of ourselves and others, is equally vital. Life choices ripple outward, affecting not just our journey but the lives of those around us. When we pause to weigh the consequences of our actions, we cultivate empathy, wisdom, and integrity. Just as a gardener considers the balance of soil, water, and sunlight to nurture healthy growth, we must consider the balance in our decisions to nurture a fulfilling life. Direction is not always about speed; it’s about clarity. Sometimes the most courageous step is not rushing toward a goal, but standing still long enough to understand the terrain. Reflection, guided by nature’s subtle lessons, helps us realign when distractions, fears, or pressures threaten to pull us off course. In the end, the answers we seek are rarely handed to us in neat packages. They are discovered gradually, through mindful observation, thoughtful questioning, and deliberate choices. By embracing the rhythm of nature, asking the right questions, and acting with consideration, we can navigate life with confidence and purpose. Every decision becomes a step not just toward a goal, but toward becoming the person we are meant to be. Life is a journey, not a race. And in that journey, the beauty lies not only in reaching the destination but in learning to move with awareness, intention, and grace, and Keeping Life Current.
