That is the question a client asked me recently. Her father was 85, living on his own in Vancouver, and about to move into assisted living. He had worked hard and saved well, but like a lot of families, he had no clear picture of what his savings could realistically support, or for how long.

So we built one together.

Many people still ask me what I actually do… and honestly most families call me when they don’t even know where to start.

A year ago on April 1, 2025, I took a leap and started NextStep after helping my own parents through some complicated transitions. I didn’t know exactly what it would become — only that families needed someone they could trust to help them navigate big decisions.

This year I’ve helped families with things like:
• Being the “feet on the ground” for out-of-town families when a parent needed hospital discharge planning or long-term care
• Helping seniors figure out if they could afford Independent and Assisted Living and what future care might look like
• Supporting families through the very hard decision of moving a loved one with dementia into memory care
• Helping with Representation Agreements and Advance Care planning
• Helping people access CPP, OAS and the Disability Tax Credit
• Connecting families with trusted healthcare professionals and healthcare advocates that help navigate the BC healthcare system Patient Pathways Healthcare Navigation + Advocates
• Helping families have difficult conversations when big decisions needed to be made
• Working with financial advisors, lawyers and accountants so families feel supported from all sides

What I’ve learned is most families don’t need more information — they need someone they trust to help them sort through it all.
