David Western Lovespoons

A number of years ago, I discovered Breton 'wedding' spoons through one held in the collection of the National History Museum of Wales. Swept up with enthusiasm, I made a couple that looked ok but were pretty disastrous from a technical point of view. Later, following Jane Mickelborough's excellent book I got better at the hinge geometry and inspired by Herve Lorant's more modern take on Breton spoon design, I started to really fall in love with these beautiful, elegant spoons!!

Love and Fishes: This lovely wedding spoon was commissioned by a very proud father. There's LOTS of romance, an ocean theme, some lovely Welsh daffodils and a flying seagull overhead. The spoon is carved from a glorious piece of very rare Garry Oak and has a remarkable 'bubbly' grain that echoes the idea of moving water. Who says you can't tell a big story in a little wooden spoon!!
