As we head into July, lake stocking is wrapping up for the season. Most stocking during the spring is done by truck. Fish are loaded into the stocking vehicles’ big tanks, which are filled with oxygenated water. At the release site, large pipes are fitted to these tanks, and the fish are stocked into their new lake or river via gravity feed. Pictured here is Premiere Lake in the east Kootenays being stocked by one of our staff from the Kootenay Trout Hatchery.

In the last few weeks of June and in early-July, high-elevation, more remote, and northern B.C. lakes are stocked. Some of these are stocked via helicopter or hiking the fish in in a backpack - stay tuned for more on this!

'Catchables' are ready to target right away. In lakes stocked with yearling or fry, you'll be catching fish stocked one or more years prior.
