Jakob Fugger's vision of affordable housing: rent of one Rhenish guilder a year since 1521.
The Fuggerei in Augsburg, Bavaria, is the world's oldest social housing complex, with about 150 residents living there today for 88 cents a year. To be eligible, residents need to be Catholic, show financial need, and have lived in Augsburg for at least two years. In return, they pray three times a day for the Fugger family and volunteer as gardeners or night watchmen.
With a waiting list that can stretch to seven years, a place here is among the rarest and most stable homes in the world.
