Calling all knitters/ crocheters!
One of the honours our volunteers have is to gift lapghans* to patients on the Palliative Care Unit at the Colchester East Hants Health Centre but our inventory is running low.
Many people in our community have made and donated hundreds of these soft and colourful treasures over the years for use on the Palliative Care Unit in our local hospital.
Lapghans are a modest covering for your lower body when being transported in a wheelchair, and provide warmth when used as a shawl or additional bedding over your feet. They are cozy and homey, made by a caring heart from our community.
For some family members, the lapghan becomes a cherished item. It may be one of the few personal belongings that was used by their person at the end of their life. It may be the only item from their last days that you can take home as a remembrance of them. Some choose to place the lapghan over the back of their persons favourite chair or across the foot of the bed, a reminder of their precious time together at the end of life.
We would also like to hear your lapghan stories. What happened to this small blanket after your person died?
If you are interested in making lapghans for distribution by Colchester East Hants Hospice Society volunteers, please contact us for details at (902) 893-3265 or [email protected]
Requirements:
• Must be a minimum of 3 feet X 4 feet
• Those who are quite ill or reaching the end of their life tend to have very sensitive skin so lapghans must be made with very soft yarn
*A lapghan is a knitted or crocheted blanket sometimes referred to as a lap robe.
