Off the ej [edge] was founded in 2013 and began its journey with Emma Halenko- the ‘e’ in Off the ej. The name is two fold: in part, it connects Emma and Janel in one word representing their bond as twins and their unifying desire for minimalism and waste reduction. Secondly, the name as a whole was inspired by the idea of using the edges of materials that are being discarded to reduce careless wa
ste. Similarly to food waste, material waste has become the norm and although we find it unfortunate, we also find it inspiring. Initially intended to be a joint project, Emma took hold of the majority of the business in 2013 while Janel went to the bush to plant trees. Off the ej soared across the Internet and hand made goods markets during this time and we hope it will continue to do so. Off the ej is currently managed and designed by both Emma and Janel Halenko and they’re excited to continue creating collections while advancing their own personal ambitions
Off the ej is a Toronto-based company that reinforces recycling and repurposing unwanted materials to inspire waste reduction and to challenge perspectives surrounding garbage and over-consumption. Essentially, we take garbage and make it beautiful. Our methods consist of gathering waste materials and then channeling our twin magic to manipulate the materials in the hopes of redefining the way the world values the fashion industry and devalues the items that are no longer fashionable. We create jewelry that is authentic, original and ethically in tune with sustainable practices. In essence, we aspire to make garbage valuable and encourage people alike to limit the resources used. Environmental concerns and the passion for design have been the cornerstones of inspiration for Off the ej.
