I learned this first hand when the interviewer asked me who their competitors were and the names of their major clients. Didn't have a clue...

You want to know their mission statement and the values that the company promotes. Consider that it's a two-way street. It's just as important that you align with what the company represents as it is that they see you as a good fit- otherwise, you won't find it satisfying to work in that environment.

See if you can google reviews by employees. Find out how they contribute to the community if that's important to you.

By doing your homework ahead, you should be able to find out what the current issues are in their industry.
