🏢 The Crossways Tenant Association recently scored a HUGE win with their organizing leading to a one-year rent freeze for all 1100 units in the two-building complex.
🔥With the city heating up and rents remaining red hot this win is a testament to the power of tenants coming together to fight for change.

🔥Tenants Have the Power💪
Tenants at Tahanan Non Profit Homes enter their second month on rent strike in protest against an 8% rent increase.
Their story was recently covered in The Toronto Star but it’s a story that echoes across the city: tenants are being squeezed by unfair and unaffordable Above Guideline Increases (AGIs).
As the city heats up and rents keep rising so will tenants. The Toronto Tenant Union is tenants across the city fighting together.
Will you rise with your neighbours and get organized?
Come join us as for a Hot New Tenant Union Orientation on the 16th of June, sign up at the link in bio or visit: https://www.tenantunion.ca/orientation 🦝

PHONE ZAP☎️
Support tenants at 24 Mabelle who have been blocked from paying by cheque.
Wilstar Management which is our landlord and former property manager hired Compten Property Management after we delivered our petition against the rent increase to Wilstar's head office in March.
Compten has notified residents that they cannot pay by cheque - this is discriminatory against people without access to computers, especially seniors. Restricting payment methods without any new agreement between landlord and tenant could be considered against the standard Ontario lease agreement.
Take a small action today to stand with your neighbours who may not be able to pay online - call landlord Wilstar c/o Ryan Gibson at 416-224-1705 ext 2223 and leave a message with the script below. If you prefer you can send an email to [email protected] and include [email protected].
We are contacting Wilstar directly because they are still the landlord and can still choose to meet with tenants and respect our rights.

Barney River promised their tenants at Rowena Dr. a meeting after tenants held a rally outside their head office and delivered a letter with findings from their tenant-run survey. Now, Barney River is refusing to meet with tenants to discuss their issues. We can’t let the landlord ignore their tenants. CALL BARNEY RIVER’S OFFICE NOW TO EXPRESS YOUR SUPPORT FOR THEIR TENANTS!

📜 call script:
Hello, I’m [NAME].
I am calling in support tenants at 100 and 105 Rowena Drive.
Barney River promised to meet with tenants to discuss their issues and find solutions. I was disappointed to learn that they backed out and are now refusing to meet with tenants. I find this unacceptable; Barney River cannot ignore tenants after they delivered a letter on April 29th that outlined issues in the building and demands a meeting. Barney River must honour its word and meet with Rowena.

📢‼️RENT 2 HIGH, NO AGI‼️📢
Did you get a 5.5% raise this year? Did your pension go up that much? Then why is the rent?!
Tenants at 25 Richview and three neighbouring buildings in Etobicoke came out to say NO to H&R Property Management’s unfair Above Guideline Increase (AGI) on Sunday.
The landlord is using this legal loophole to charge tenants for renovations they didn’t ask for, like new balconies, while their buildings suffer from longstanding maintenance issues tenants have been complaining about for months.
Landlords will never miss an opportunity to increase their margins and we can’t wait around for the government to step in. Only the tenants united have the power to force change. Housing is for people, not profit!
Tenants across the city are rising up. Want to organize with your neighbours but not sure how to start? Want to learn more about your rights and what you can do to protect your home?
Get involved by reaching out to us via the links in our bio. We have regular orientations, no prior experience necessary.

📢‼️EVICTIONS ≠ WELLNESS‼️📢
How can you claim to be a healthcare provider, offering a “welcoming, cozy environment” for your patients while trying to kick a family with children out of their home?
The owners of Bloom Health Clinic, in the heart of Roncesvalles, are trying to evict tenants in the two units above their business, claiming they intend to renovate one and move into the other.
In a neighbourhood that is increasingly unaffordable for longtime residents, this is part of a wider pattern of displacement happening across the city, where homes are for profit over people.
Dr. Carissa DuPuis: what about the health of tenants living under the perpetual stress of trying to make ends meet in an increasingly unliveable economic situation? How can there be “wellness” when you have no idea if your children will have a home next month?
The Toronto Tenant Union stands in solidarity with tenants resisting these threats of eviction. Nobody is kicking our neighbours to the curb, not in the name of “health and wellness”, not EVER!

📢 RENT STRIKE 📢
Ever heard of an 8% rent increase in non-profit housing? Now you have!
Tenants at 6a Greenlaw Ave. in Davenport certainly didn’t want to hear it. They’ve been withholding their rent since May 1st, until the landlord drops the rent back down to the government guideline (2.1%).
Tenants tried explaining to Tahanan Non Profit Homes Corporation that nobody can afford such an increase, especially care workers and elderly on fixed incomes, but the landlord left them with no choice.
The landlord thought tenants would lie down but they’ve come together and are stronger than ever. With the help of the Toronto Tenant Union and allies, we’ll win this fight and send a message to landlords everywhere that affordable housing means affordable for everyone!
