What you're seeing is called Peristalsis. It is
the involuntary constriction and relaxation of the muscles of the intestine, creating wave-like movements that push the contents of the canal forward.

Peristaltic "waves" occur in the esophagus, stomach, and intestines.•

_ In this Anatomy Clip, we see the lungs inflate through artificial ventilation.

Typically, ventilation occurs via the diaphragm and external intercostal muscles (muscles between the ribs) contract and the inner intercostal muscles relax, allowing more space in the inner cavity, creating a vacuum pulling in surrounding air. Carbon dioxide is exchanged with oxygen. The diaphragm and external intercostal muscles relax and the inner intercostal muscles contract, reducing the size of the inner cavity, pushing out the CO2 and the process begins again.

When a baby is first born, their intercostal muscles are undeveloped, thus they breathe mainly with their diaphragm. Additionally, their nasal passages are very thin, letting in a small amount of air, ergo, they are primarily mouth breathers. Over time, the muscles develop and the nasal passages open.
