I like to use by like a tarot deck. When I am contemplating my artistic beliefs or creative craft, I’ll flip through the book at random and read. Serendipitously, these days I find myself meditating on my own authentic mark making and fell in to this chapter.
My favourite artists are unabashed in the way they express personal gesture- creating their own iconic aesthetic by simply succumbing to their natural tempo and way of being. This is not to say that “knowing yourself” is so easy. We continue to change, to be inspired and to try on different hats. Yet, there are accents in our sense of self that remain constant and when an artist learns to speak openly with these, the work that comes through feels wonderfully honest.
I am always challenged by this. Success in an artwork for me is found in achieving a true and personal interpretation, a goal often thwarted by self judgement of what is appealing to others, “good” or influenced by current popularity.
Here is to rediscovering some honest scribbles and gesture that satisfies me first.

Thinking back to installation days for the last show I had the pleasure of curating - ‘Nature with Nurture’ working with the incredible Latinx artists at .
3 months pregnant in this photo and now only a month away from delivery, the concept of this show resonates with me now more than ever.
It represented the energy that holds you to your life’s creative calling while granting your authentic self the opportunity to respond. This dialogue is supported by every generation that came before you, wholesomely responsible for influencing your unique identity. Poetically and inevitably, our own struggles and inspiration will propagate the future generation.
Today I remember that doubt lies in many corners and that life will move on with or without you. There is no point in restraint, no point in fearing exploration nor its outcomes. Follow every curiosity and revel in the humility that comes with not knowing. This is the path of ultimate bravery and true beauty somehow always waits for you at the end of it.
