There’s a subtle feeling I get when I know something is finished, and it’s hard to pinpoint exactly what it is, but I can usually tell when I compare two songs that are technically done. The arrangements are complete, the production is there. It’s mixed, sometimes mastered, but one feels finished and the other one doesn’t. The ones that don’t feel finished create a lot of anxiety, because there’s this pressure to release it and move on, and yet I have this feeling that something needs to change, but I just don’t know what it is.

It’s hard to move on because I spent all this time working on it, but that feeling is still not there. Sometimes I’ve found that stepping away, letting time pass and then revisiting it helps. It did for this song.

Changing the arrangement and mixing the drums differently gave me that feeling, but sometimes I have to completely strip things down, back to the original idea, and try again to see where in the process I lost the magic.
