🥹what a genuine and simple communal joy it was to watch Marion lay eggs and start her nest with some of you!
I can’t believe how many of you loved the stories and updates and felt so sad, alongside us, to see it not work out. This was a beautiful reminder of how fascinating the animals are that we share the city with. I sincerely didn’t get tired of checking in on her and watching what she was up to. I learned so much about mallards because of her!
Nature is fascinating and brutal.
While it came to a sad end with a raccoon, all my mallard research suggests she will begin somewhere else that she feels is safer 🪺
She is a beautiful duck. She and her mate hung around near our place after losing her nest. I know I’m applying human emotions to her but she was looking a little cheery in this photo and I was relieved to see her getting back into her routine 💦 drinking water, eating, and flying.
I was so sad yesterday, with many of you, for her to lose this clutch. I’ve gone down a rabbit hole and want to be part of making safer habitats for these ducks as well as other animals we share the city with.
I’m selling this print ⬆️ in three sizes, and going to donate a portion of each sale to for their conservation work.
She looked so beautiful in the morning sunlight ✨💛
Thanks for caring for her, supporting me, and being nice to all the ducks you meet☁️🦆

our front garden girl 🪺 taking this hail like a champ and getting hydrated 🌨️
On April 6 we noticed a duck in our garden, in the following days she laid 13 eggs total and as of April 16 has been sitting. À la, sitting duck.
We have learned she will stay here for about 20-23 hours a day to incubate her eggs, leaving only to bathe and eat. We estimate the eggs will hatch around Mother’s Day here in Canada 🇨🇦 sometime between May 10-15ish
She has many long days and nights ahead. She’s already encountered some local outdoor cats, a skunk who destroyed two eggs, and other aggressive male ducks.
As is advised online, we aren’t interfering but we are trying to assist, we have put up motion sensor lights on the lawn to hopefully deter the skunk and other smaller predators. We try to shoo away the outdoor cats.
She has a road to cross to the water so we also setup duck crossing signs to attempt to slow traffic, we think it’s helping a bit.
If you’re as curious to follow this miracle of nature as we are, we will continue sharing about her on my .films IG stories as well as a highlight reel “🦆”.
Remember to do what you can to help your own local wildlife.
We are their biggest foe.
🤞here’s hoping she made a good choice with her nesting location and that many ducklings hatch mid-May✨
