🥶What to Do If a Pipe Freezes in your Home🥶
While winter conditions are expected, deep freezes demand extra attention. Taking a few additional steps during extreme cold can help protect your home and avoid unexpected plumbing emergencies.
👉 If water flow slows to a trickle or stops:
💧 Open a Faucet - Turn on a cold water tap, preferably in the basement, to help relieve pressure as the pipe thaws.
🔥 Apply Gentle Heat - Use a hair dryer, electric heating pad, or warm towels to slowly warm the frozen pipe.
Never Use Open Flames - Avoid torches or open flames, which can cause pipes to burst or create a fire hazard.
💦 Check for Leaks - Once thawed, inspect the pipe carefully for cracks or leaks that may have developed.

👉 Homeowner Responsibility - Frozen pipes within your home or on your property typically require a licensed plumber.
👉 City Assistance - If the issue appears to be outside your property or you can’t locate the frozen section, contact Toronto 311 to request an investigation.
👉 Emergency Situations - If a pipe bursts and causes flooding, shut off your main water valve immediately and seek professional help and call your insurance broker for advice on how to proceed.
