Meet Empathy Squad Member from Cohort 18, Anke đź‘‹

“I am 19 years old and currently taking a gap year before returning to school in the fall. I plan on getting a degree in journalism which is why I got involved with the Empathy Squad as it is the perfect opportunity to explore something I am interested in while being out of school. My piece revolves around immigrants’ experiences with moving to Canada and adapting to a new culture and way of life. This topic came about on New Year’s while having a late night talk with two of my close friends about my experience with immigrating from South Africa and what I have taught them as Canadians. I hope that the people who hear this piece and have gone through similar struggles with their move, can find comfort in knowing they are not alone, and that anyone who hasn’t, has a better understanding of the courage it takes to leave your life, friends, and family behind.”

Tomorrow, Anke will be hosting a listening party for her podcast, “Uprooted: Immigrant Identity and Belonging in Canada”
