“A doctor sat down across from me and said the words no parent is ever prepared to hear: ‘Your son has cancer.’ In that moment, the world as I knew it stopped.”
Joseph is a happy, healthy, vibrant and energetic eight-year-old. But just a few years ago he was undergoing endless procedures, medications, and chemotherapy. His mom Diana credits the staff at SickKids for guiding their family through some of their hardest moments.
“The doctors, nurses, and staff never once let us feel alone. When we had no one else, they became our family, our strength, and our lifeline.”
Nurse Sue was one of those people - “her approach wasn’t just about protocol. It was about compassion.”
20 years ago, Sue also cared for Antonio Damiano.
It was in honour of him that Frank and Martina Damiano originally founded Friends Helping SickKids – to give back to the Hospital that saved their son. Over the past 25 years, they’ve raised over $2M to support leukemia research and care at SickKids.
This year’s milestone event meant that Joseph, Antonio and Sue could all be in the same room together for the very first time. A true full circle SickKids moment. 💙
“It’s the other moms I’ve met through SickKids who have really held me up.”
This Mother’s Day we celebrate the unbreakable bonds, the unwavering strength, and the unspoken understanding of SickKids moms, and moms everywhere.
To the bereaved moms, the experienced moms, the mother-figures, the soon-to-be moms, the caregivers, the new moms, those yearning to be a mom and everyone in between, you are seen, you are loved, and you are appreciated. 💙
Happy Mother’s Day. 💐 🌸 🌻
“The uncertainty might be the hardest part.”
Brena, Heidi, Linda and LaTrice are moms to children with diverse diagnoses, treatment plans, and medical journeys. Their day-to-day lives, backgrounds and families all look incredibly different. But they’re all SickKids moms.
This Mother’s Day, we’re honoured to share their stories of courage and strength. 💙
