【Challenges from Different Perspectives: Exploring the Sources of Work Pressure for Teachers in China and Canada】
Recently, a piece of dark news deeply moved me—a young teacher in Zhengzhou chose to end her life due to overwhelming stress. In her final words, phrases like "trapped in a cage," "feeling breathless," "truly collapsing," and "holding on to the last breath every day at work" painted a bleak picture. This made me wonder, is the working environment for teachers in China really much harsher than in other countries?
01 Teachers in China: Dual Pressures of Teaching and Administration
In China, some teachers may enter the profession without sufficient training and internship experience. For new teachers, the lack of education and training may lead to various challenges in the teaching process, contributing significantly to their stress.
Furthermore, Chinese teachers not only have to fulfill their daily teaching tasks, such as lesson preparation, teaching, and grading assignments, but also handle a substantial amount of administrative work. This includes student counseling, participating in parent-teacher meetings, writing promotional articles, planning activities, conducting open classes, and participating in competitions. These responsibilities not only consume a significant portion of their time but also create immense pressure as they juggle between teaching and administrative tasks.
Additionally, prolonged periods of overwork may prevent them from maintaining sufficient personal rest and self-regulation time, contributing to excessive stress. This pressure doesn't solely stem from teaching and administrative tasks but also from the expectations set by the school and leadership.
To improve the working environment for teachers and alleviate their stress, reforms are needed on multiple fronts. This includes adjusting the expectations and management styles of schools and leadership, providing more teacher training and support, and improving teachers' working conditions and hours.
02 Teachers in Canada: Focused on Teaching
Elementary and middle school teachers in Canada often serve as generalists, teaching a broad range of subjects such as English, math, science, and physical education. They may occasionally teach certain courses in other classes, such as drama. Lesson preparation in Canada may be more time-consuming, especially for new teachers who have to create their lesson plans and teaching materials.
However, the Canadian teacher system lacks the strict control from higher-ups, allowing teachers to prepare according to their preferences without the added stress of scrutiny and revisions. Moreover, Canada provides comprehensive and professional training, enabling even new teachers to handle their responsibilities with ease.
In addition to teaching, Canadian teachers also need to engage in administrative and research activities throughout the year. However, the workload is far less extensive and intricate compared to their counterparts in China.
Teachers in Canada can register for research activities online, most of which are scheduled during working hours. Unlike in other countries, Canadian teachers are almost never required to participate in research outside of teaching hours. Staff meetings are usually held once a month, lasting around 1.5 hours, and attendance is not mandatory, ensuring that teachers are not burdened with additional pressure.
The primary stress for Canadian teachers comes from the teaching itself. They must balance freedom and responsibility, continuously learn and improve to meet the diverse learning needs of students.
Nevertheless, it is this pressure and challenge that shape the professionalism and enthusiasm of Canadian teachers, enabling them to play a crucial role in education.
03 Teachers: Focused on Education
The work pressure and sources for teachers in China and Canada differ mainly due to the distinct education systems, parental and societal expectations, and working environments in each country.
Regardless of the country, the most important aspect for teachers is to provide quality education to their students.
04 North American Comprehensive English Curriculum: Original Materials, Experienced Foreign Teachers
The Complete American Curriculum (CAC) is dedicated to providing a comprehensive learning environment for children. It not only focuses on improving English language skills but also incorporates the philosophy of Canadian education, emphasizing joyful learning and holistic development. Through various course activities and interactive learning, children are encouraged to discover their interests and potential while experiencing the joy of learning English.
Foreign teachers in CAC come from North America, with authentic accents and rich teaching experience, ensuring lively and interesting classes. Concerns about whether children can adapt to entirely English-speaking classes and the fear of not understanding or keeping up with the pace are addressed through a special offer for new students. Scan the QR code on the poster to book a free one-on-one online class with a real foreign teacher. Limited spots are available, so act quickly!

【Opening the Gates to Canadian Education】Why are Chinese students choosing this joyful learning haven?
Why are more and more Chinese families choosing to send their children to Canada for education? Do you have any doubts or suspicions about this?
Today, I'll take you on a journey through Canada's educational landscape to explore its vibrant teaching atmosphere and uncover its unique features.
Canada's "Happy Education"
Many people approach sending their children abroad for education with the attitude that "children must have a more successful, brilliant life." This, of course, is understandable. However, Canadian education is not solely aimed at nurturing societal elites. In contrast, it emphasizes providing more space for each child to explore themselves and society.
Compared to education in China, Canada places a stronger emphasis on "happy education." You're probably familiar with the term "happy education." Many in China believe that if children are too happy, studying will be too easy, and they won't learn much. But did you know that this is not an educational system, but a philosophy? This is precisely the charm of Canadian education.
Where is the happiness in "happy education"?
In Canadian public schools, despite possibly having basic teaching facilities, efforts are made to arrange classrooms to ensure students can learn joyfully in a warm, comfortable, and nurturing environment. They also emphasize friendly teachers and a lighter academic load to ensure a joyful learning experience. After school, a variety of extracurricular activities await students, aiming to cultivate interests and allow students to showcase their strengths, rather than promoting competition and grades.
Private schools offer more resources and challenges, but this doesn't necessarily mean increased competition. With richer resources, private schools boast more complete campus environments and facilities, such as beautiful classical-style teaching buildings, forests, lawns, gymnasiums, music rooms, dance studios, libraries, swimming pools, and theaters, offering diverse extracurricular activities. Students in private schools might have busier campus lives, but they similarly do not encourage competition or prioritize grades.
In this non-competitive campus environment, teachers encourage every student, and without competition among students, they can focus more on exploring their interests rather than striving to surpass others or pushing for grades!
Happy education vs. achievement and scores
In contrast, China's education system seems to place more emphasis on academic achievement and scores. Rigorous pressure and culture have made competition and grades the focal point of a child's life. Chinese parents generally believe that if a child expends effort and time, there must be some kind of outcome; otherwise, it's considered a waste of time, lack of talent, or "learning in vain." For instance, a child who has studied ballet for many years in Canada might not have movements deemed as standard by a dance teacher in China, making the learning process seem futile.
We need to recognize the respective strengths of different educational models. China's education system certainly has academic advantages, but it may sacrifice a child's joyful childhood, overall development, and mental health. Conversely, Canadian education, on the contrary, prioritizes happy growth over achievement, yet at times may lack specialization in specific fields. There's no definitive answer as to which model is better. However, for parents, choosing the educational approach that best fits their child is the most important factor.

Number Count
