We were standing out on his porch looking up at the starlit sky in Franklin, TN and he explained how the stars we were looking at have since disappeared. It inspired the chorus to my song, STARS which is still one of my favorites.
He is the songwriter I have collaborated most with in my career. He was my brother and I had just reunited with him a couple weeks before his passing. Having a kid turned many of my friendships on their belly and I was so excited to be back in Nashville to plan future writes together again and hear how things were going for him.
Something was different in his eyes. There was a fear, his hands are shaking, his limp was worse. I tried to talk to him about it but he brushed it off blaming it on overworking himself the past few days. I called when I got home to ask again and he said he was much better, not to worry.
His passing has hit me long and hard. It’s filled with mystery and confusion. I’m so sad he was alone. That he was surrounded by so many people but didn’t feel he could reach out when he was in trouble.
I will try to share some of the songs we wrote together over time. I don’t have it in me right now.
Craig, you were my super fan since the first time you heard me sing. We went to Detroit and cleaned your dad’s house out together when he passed away. I stayed at your Nashville hideout and we traveled to LA together, did writes whenever and however we could. You were a champion for every artist you worked with and a gentle soul. I’m so very sad we won’t have that next writing trip.
Thank you for the endless memories and the songs that will keep you close. The next one will be for you. 😞
