Intoxication is not consent.
Yet under current New York law, a person can be too intoxicated to understand what is happening to them and still be denied justice because their intoxication was deemed "voluntary."
In this powerful essay on Fractured Archive, Leslie Hunt shares her own experience and explains the legislative loophole that continues to prevent survivors from seeing accountability in sexual assault cases.
The Senate has passed a bill that would close this gap. The Assembly has yet to act. This is an important, urgent read about consent, justice, and the laws that continue to fail survivors.

We are thrilled to announce that Kyo Lee’s I CUT MY TONGUE ON A BROKEN COUNTRY has been shortlisted for the Gerald Lampert Memorial Award for a debut book of poetry by the League of Canadian Poets!
The Jury said, “As soon as started reading i cut my tongue on a broken country, I was immediately taken with Lee's voice and restraint. The reader is immersed in this young poet's world as she moves masterfully between the violent past of her parents' Korea and the North American now of her own blossoming sexuality, romantic desire, and freedom. Filled with delicate vulnerability, tenderness, and striking images, these poems are a reconciliation between what we inherit and must carry and how we must carve out space for our own life."
The winner will be named June 3.

Congratulations, Kyo and good luck!
