As a parent, I feel broken. Again.

Reading the news, watching the videos and tearfully hugging your partner feeling shattered imagining what if this happened at your child’s school?

We watched the body cam video that was released today. And felt sick hearing the woman out front of the school briefing the police that they got the kids out of the building but two children were missing.

And saw the little cubbies in the hallways that look exactly like our daughter’s daycare cubby. Then watching as the police get to the second floor and seeing them quickly step over a small blurred body on floor as they made their to the shooter.

It’s heartbreaking.

And infuriating. How many times are we going to allow this to happen? Why are we focusing on everything except the leading cause of death in US children?

We have no more words. 💔

“They talk about how you’ll be overjoyed to meet your new baby.

But so rarely do they talk about how you’ll also meet a brand new version of yourself.

How as your baby discovers the world for the first time, you too will be navigating brand new terrain.

Your body, your relationships, your experience of existing in the world, the way you see yourself and your purpose here - they will all shift.

You’re still you, but different.

And how everything you’ve been taught you need to run from or bury down deep for no one to see will upheave itself. It will sit right on the surface, begging to be acknowledged and tended to.

The softness. The deep emotion. The wounds. The pain. The need to be nurtured and acknowledged in the same way we so diligently tend to our babies.

No one tells you that in postpartum, you come face to face with everything you’ve ever wanted, along with everything you’ve ever tried to hide from.

And they certainly don’t tell you that it cracks you wide open, even in the places in your heart that have been hardened and weathered over time. Especially in those places.

They ask if you’re excited to meet the new baby. But no one ever asks if you’re ready to meet the new you.”
