Happy Birthday APCASA!

To help celebrate APCASA’s 11th birthday and everything they’ve accomplished, we wanted to share just a little bit of their story.

At the crossroads where Guatemala’s western highlands end, and the slope down to the pacific ocean begins, sits a small multi-ethnic community of 35 families called Santa Anita.

Twenty-two years ago in the aftermath of Guatemala’s 36-year civil war, a group of former guerrilleros (or revolutionary soldiers) decided to trade in their guns and purchase an old coffee farm where they could (re)build their lives. The founders of Santa Anita La Union dedicated themselves to figuring out everything they needed to know about growing, processing, and selling coffee.

With success, also came hardships. Internal disagreement over strategic visions divided the community and then a rust coloured fungus called Roya swept through the region, wiping out over 70% of Santa Anita’s coffee plants.

But coffee is more than just any old commodity for these revolutionary farmers and a small band re-formed their coffee association calling it APCASA. Then, with a little help from , the and , they managed to replace over 45,000 coffee trees and begin again to export their beans and share their story with the world.

APCASA helped inspire Granito Coffee and we want to wish our dear friends and mentors a very happy birthday! Feliz cumpleaños amigxs!

We're also proud to help spread their granitos in Canada and the US! To learn more about Santa Anita, check out the APCASA blog post and get your bag of their revolutionary beans in our online shop! Links in our bio!
