There are a lot of horrors to be witnessing right now. If you take in a horrific image or information, try to give yourself a moment before moving on to the next thing. Take a breath. Look away from the screen.
Moving from horror to silly without a break is like whiplash to our system. I'm not saying, stay with only the horror. I'm just staying, take a moment. Acknowledge the impact. Maybe take a moment to consider how it is you DO want to respond, if you do want to respond. Then, decide to move on. Allow yourself to connect with pleasure, joy, humour, distraction, whatever! These are not bad things! But if we try and flit from horror to distraction, it can feel almost like we're trying to erase one with the other. And I believe that wreaks havoc on our nervous system, on our soul, and on our capacities for collective care.
Let's include our need for distraction and pleasure and connection along with our need to engage with the suffering that our own privileges are intertwined with. One CAN nourish the other. We just need to be more intentional about it...
