Simplifying data privacy to help businesses with their privacy needs - if you collect and work with personal information, you have mandatory obligations - let us help so that you can focus on what matters!

09/12/2021

R is for showing Respect for the personal information (PI) you collect.

The PI you collect NEVER belongs to you (the business), you are the custodian/guardian of that PI and you have a legal obligation to use adequate measures to protect it, use it only for the purpose for which it was collected, allow the PI owner to access/update/correct the PI you have and withdraw consent for you to use their PI, if needed, among other things.

So how can you reduce the burden placed on you when you collect your customers’ PI, one easy way is to practice limiting the type of PI you collect. Don’t be that business that collects as much PI as the customer will willingly give in the hope of using it for something in the future – the more PI you collect the harder it is to protect and the more risks you expose your business to.

Before collecting, ask yourself:
- Why am I collecting these types of PI, i.e. what purpose will I be using it for?

- Why am I collecting these types of PI, i.e. what purpose will I be using it for?

- Is it absolutely necessary to collect ALL this PI for this purpose?

- Do I have the necessary measure in place to securely protect the PI collected?

- Is there another way to fulfil this purpose without collecting these types of PI?
