Here is something most people get wrong after an injury.
They rest. Completely. Because that is what they were told.
And then a week goes by. Two weeks. The pain eases slightly. They move again — and it flares up. So they rest again. And the cycle continues.
Here is what the research actually tells us: for the vast majority of musculoskeletal injuries, early guided movement produces better outcomes than complete rest. Not pushing through pain — guided movement. There is a meaningful difference.
Rest has a role in the acute phase — typically the first 24 to 72 hours after injury, when inflammation is doing important work. But beyond that window, controlled loading of the tissue is what drives healing. Tendons, muscles, cartilage, and bone all respond to mechanical stimulus. Without it, they do not remodel properly.
What gets people stuck:
- Resting too long, losing strength and mobility around the injury
- Returning to full activity too soon without rebuilding load capacity
- Never getting a proper assessment to know which phase they are actually in
