This year marks the 30th anniversary of National Indigenous Peoples Day, which recognizes and celebrates the traditions, cultures and contributions of First Nations, Inuit and Métis.

Indigenous Peoples play an essential role in protecting and conserving the lands, waters and ice in the region now known as Canada. Building strong partnerships with these communities is an important part of how Parks Canada protects and shares natural and cultural heritage in Canada. Parks Canada continues to collaborate with Indigenous partners to honour the historic and contemporary contributions of Indigenous Peoples and their connections to these places, and to support Indigenous stewardship for the lands, waters, and ice on which many national historic sites, national parks and national marine conservation areas are found.

The summer solstice holds deep spiritual and cultural significance for many Indigenous Peoples. Today, join us in marking this time of renewal, connection, and celebration with the Nations and communities who care for these special places.
