From Play to Words consultants believe in the power of play We believe that enhancing your child's social and cognitive development through interactions in play is all important. During play children develop language and motor skills. Opportunities to play also present opportunities to socialize and engage in problem-solving.

You may have heard the term “learned helplessness” (otherwise known as prompt-dependency). At From Play to Words, we see this not as a child issue (not a learning issue or a learner issue) — but a support design issue.

When adults talk children through every step of a task, we can accidentally become part of the routine. Too much verbal prompting can overwhelm, interrupt thinking, and teach kids to wait for cues instead of noticing what’s around them.

Instead of talking more, we can support intentionally & with purpose:

Build routines &
- Use gestures instead of words
- Set up materials in start-to-finish order
- Use visuals like picture recipes or schedules

These “quieter” supports help children stay engaged, think for themselves, and build confidence — without pressure.

Less talking. Better design. More growth.
