As part of our ongoing work to strengthen vaccine awareness in East African communities across Canada with support from the Public Health Agency of Canada Action 4 Humanity Development Foundation hosted a Community Vaccine Learning Circle in partnership with AIMGA.
International medical graduates working as vaccine navigators in Calgary shared their experiences from their home countries and discussed how those lessons guide their work within the Canadian vaccine system.
The group highlighted several real challenges affecting vaccine education, including limited health education, low English proficiency, cultural and language barriers, trust issues, and the lack of a centralized health information system.
Participants also brought forward practical solutions: offering mobile vaccine information services, providing more health information at newcomer arrival points, integrating vaccine education into immigration services, and using a multi-layered approach to reach diverse communities.
Many participants expressed appreciation for the work Action 4 Humanity and AIMGA are doing, especially in providing accurate, culturally appropriate, and multilingual vaccine information. They shared how this has helped many community members make informed decisions about their health.
What made this Learning Circle unique was the warm, culturally grounded discussion style. People felt comfortable, listened to, and able to share openly—creating a space for real learning and community connection.Public Health Agency of CanadaSouth Sudanese Community Association in Panhandle RegionSomali Canadian Society Of Calgary
