43 of 52 songs in a year.

It's officially a year since I started this challenge. Although Iโ€™m nine videos behind, I have written 52 songs this year and will get the remaining videos up as quickly as possible.

Black Bear is a song about perseverance and resilience. Sometimes we can be our own worst enemies. I know Iโ€™ve been mine at times. Sometimes life and the world are just hard, and it can feel like everything around us is trying to take us down. I wrote this song to remind myself to stand tall, to look forward, and to accept, maybe even be proud of, the scars life has left, whether self-inflicted or otherwise.

42 of 52 songs in a year: Chakobsa

I am a huge fan of sci-fi and fantasy books. A few years ago, in anticipation of the upcoming Dune movie, I started talking about the series with my brother. He had been watching youtube book club, which I highly recommend if thats your thing. I had never read the book but after a video or two of hers I knew I would be hooked. Since then I have read all six of Frank Herberts installements of the series and I have started reading the books by his son Brian. Here is my musical tribute to the Fremen, the indigenous people of the planet Arrakis, or Dune. Their resoursfulness, resilience to oppression, and the sheer will of working together towards a unified goal that would take generations to accomplish (at least in the first book) is admirable. Chakobsa is the name of their ancient language. It wasn't always spoken but many who kept ancient wisdom knew it.

Rebecca Lorna and I are starting something really special with High Beam Dreams in Gibsons. We are hoping this series does well so we can give more local, up and coming artists the focus and appreciation they deserve.

The first installment of That Old Time Feeling Series is Jan 28th and features the amazing duo, Duke & Goldie!

I often imagine what it would be like to go off and live among the trees somewhere away from the need for money, the rat race of society, and living in a way that is absolutely and totally self-sufficient. That sounds like paradise to me. I do not believe that kind of freedom is unrealistic for us as humans. However, the way our global society is currently structured, along with the complete corporate capture of our resources, labour, and energy, makes that dream feel increasingly out of reach. I hope that within my lifetime I will see this trend of greed and exploitation begin to change, and that humanity will return to an appreciation, reverence, and stewardship of nature. For now, I will keep singing.

What a journey so far. So much has happened this year, both personally and globally. When I started this challenge, I was deeply inspired by early folk singers who used their talent to speak out for people, confront injustice, and resist fascism in all its forms, artists like Woody Guthrie, Pete Seeger, Bob Dylan, Nina Simone, and Billie Holiday.

For many years, I had felt the urge to do something with my own voice. Finally, with the undeniable rise of authoritarianism weโ€™ve witnessed in recent years, and as the realities of late-stage capitalism began to reveal the cracks in our society, slowly widening into gaping holes, I had enough. Writing may not seem like much, but it has become my form of resistance.

I still have twelve songs and videos left to go. Some are already written, and others remain in the abyss of ideas yet to come. Not all of my songs are protest songs, this one isnโ€™t, but I will continue to stand for a fair and just world, to resist fascism, and to remain honest and vulnerable in my songwriting.

Footprints
Lyrics:

As I look through the muck
I'm jealous of the foot prints
The shoes stuck in the mud
Paint a picture of last night
Maybe they're footprints of fear
Of love or souls that left last year
Maybe I'll see them once again
Before they was
Away

So I'm making my own footprints On the sea
before the jealousy succeeds in
Destroying all I've come to learn and love
So I'll reach up and stomp down
Tell me a story of fear
Of joy or pains of yesteryear?
Tell me I'll see them once again
Before they wash away
