Remember the punishment of writing the same thing over and over? Authority figures having nothing better up their sleeves than to waste your time instead of give you tools to overcome your problems?

Turns out this can evoke a phenomenon called jamais vu. It's explained as the opposite of deja vu from the researchers who created this article:

https://www.sciencealert.com/the-opposite-of-dj-vu-is-even-more-uncanny

As a graphic designer, I get this all the time. An unfortunate part of a designers job is matching fonts and this is very tedious.

There's sites like WhatFontIs which even has a convenient photo mode for mobile to help track down a font faster. This site analyzes the font to give similar fonts if not the exact match.

Pretty sweet!

When you've been in the industry for a while you develop a Rolodex of recognizable fonts. However, with the industry being pervaded (tainted most would say) by Canva users, there's some fonts specific to the program. If anything is a bane to designers, it's proprietary practices.

I digress.

Finding a font to match your project eventually puts you in a situation of quickly analyzing lists with the intended text in a list of fonts. This process can make a person's eyes go buggy.

That's where this jamais vu occurs. The word starts looking wrong. Like those symbols don't make a recognizable word anymore and each letter is even just broken down into shapes to your eye.

This phenomenon might not happen to everyone, but I've discussed it with many peers and they agree, it's not an isolated instance.

This ever happen to you?

I do critiques for tips via ko-fi. Your designs, art, decals, stickers can all use a second set of eyes. 👀👀💁✅
