As the earth rests beneath a blanket of snow, it reminds us to take this time to recuperate.

Tonight is the longest night of the year. Traditionally the Winter Solstice is a time to reflect on the past, to tell stories, and to renew ourselves for the year ahead.

Tomorrow, after its extended rest, the sun will return, and the days will gradually grow long again. But tonight, we will be following the sun’s lead and using this time to recharge.

We thank Elders Florence and Philip Paynter and Elder Bone for sharing their wisdom and guiding us through ceremony earlier this month.

The breeding ground for hate is SK

THE TRAGIC “STARLIGHT TOURS”
From approximately 1976 to the early 2000s the Saskatoon Police are rumored to have taken numerous Indigenous women and men on “starlight tours” where they confined them to their police cars until they dropped them off on the outskirts of the city, in temperatures exceeding -25, leaving them to find their way back or die.
It’s known that in that time period Rodney Naistus, Lawrence Wegner and 17-year-old Neil Stonechild (pictured top right) froze to death as they attempted to make it to safety.
Darrell Night, (top left) of Saulteaux First Nation was also taken by police and left in the January cold wearing only a jean jacket, jeans and running shoes. Fortunately he was able to make it to a hydro station and get assistance there.
Darrell Night blew the whistle on what was happening, resulting in the two officers who dropped him off being convicted of unlawful confinement and serving months in jail.
But despite a number of Inquiries being held no police officer has ever been convicted directly of the freezing deaths of so many others.
Sadly, in recent weeks Darrell Night passed away at age 56. We send our heartfelt condolences to his family.
