This is the girl this community showed up for π§‘π₯Ί
Wow! What a week and a half it has been. I cannot express enough the gratitude I feel for each and every single person who has supported me the past week!! I never expected the Three Fires - Flowing Spirits mural to connect with as many people as it didπ€
I have been creating for as long as I can remember. The picture above was the first time I ever won an award for my art!! If you told this girl sheβd have a mural in city hall I donβt know if she would have believed you.
One of my main goals with creating art is to create a conversation, and for people to relate to one another in a way they never expected. I can confidently say, this mural did that.
To my Anishinaabe friends, the people who belong to The Council of Three Fires, I hope you always view this piece as my love letter to all of you! NiΓ‘:wen, Chi miigwech for making me feel like I have community to continue to learn from and lean on π§‘π¦

Thank you to the UNDRIP Committee for commissioning this mural. This mural represents the Three Fires Confederacy or Council of Three Fires which is a long standing alliance between the Odawa, Ojibway and Potawatomi. This alliance dates back to 796 AD and has been withheld by these three nations for thousands of years centred in the Great Lakes region. To be able to create a visual representation of these three nations is a huge honour to me.
I was born and raised in Corunna, a mixed Mohawk girl knowing little to nothing about my culture, growing up off reserve; it was the people from these three nations who have helped guide me on my journey of learning my culture.
So that being said, if you wish to congratulate me on this achievement of having a mural displayed in City Hall, I would instead like you to direct that love and praise to the people who have looked after this land and its water ways for centuries. I would like you to learn the true history of the people, the land and the water and when you do I would ask that you move forward with respect and appreciation. All my relations, chi miigwech! π§‘β¨π¦
