How Rival is redefining the custom baseball experience. ⚾️

Start-up baseball brand Rival came to Captive looking to take their product and online customer experience to the next level. Founder JJ had the product. He had the passion. But he needed a brand identity and an e-commerce engine that could punch above its weight class.

Through graphic design, custom photography, and hours of masking out products piece by piece, our team added some new tools to our belt, all while bringing a product to market that our customer and their customers can be excited about.

1️⃣ THE BRAND IDENTITY

Rival came to Captive with an existing brand identity, but they had expressed that it felt disconnected and incomplete. They needed to look like they belonged on the same shelf as the industry’s legacy brands.

Our design team took that away and started by refining and evolving Rival’s existing logos and wordmarks, as well as creating a colour story that made a visual impact and immediately conveyed the unique possibilities of the Rival product.

Lastly we introduced a tagline that speaks to them being the “little guy” or the “underdog” in the industry, all while paying homage to their work ethic and namesake.

“Work until your idols become your RIVALS.”

2️⃣ THE CUSTOMIZER 🛠️

The biggest opportunity in this project for the Captive team was the custom bat and glove builder. The goal? A seamless, high-end experience that lived right inside Shopify.

With the help of an industry leading third party plug-in called Kickflip we were able to achieve this; but it didn’t come without hours of photography, Photoshop, web development and endless tweaks trying to get every colour, texture and stitch right.

3️⃣ THE RESULT

A high-performance e-commerce site where the product isn't just sold, it’s created by the player. Rival now has the visual identity and the technical infrastructure to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with the biggest names in baseball.
