🐻 DID YOU KNOW? Momma bears may use humans as a safety shield to help protect their cubs.
During our time photographing Alaskan brown bears, we noticed something fascinating. Some momma bears with young cubs would stay surprisingly close to the lodge and other areas where people were present.
Why?
Adult male bears can pose a serious threat to cubs. A male may kill cubs that are not his own, which can cause the female to become receptive to breeding again sooner.
But many large male bears prefer to avoid areas with regular human activity.
Some mother bears appear to learn this and take advantage of it, staying closer to people and developed areas where dominant males may be less comfortable approaching. Such was the case this day when we came back to our cabin after an early morning outing, only to be welcomed by momma and her cubs. 🐻🐻🐻
In a way, humans can become an unexpected safety shield between a protective momma bear and the males that threaten her cubs.
Watching these mothers adapt their behaviour to give their cubs a better chance of survival was another reminder of just how intelligent and resourceful bears can be.
Of course, this does not mean bears near lodges or people are tame or safe to approach. We always observed them from a safe distance and followed the guidance of experienced bear guides.
🐻 Nature is full of remarkable survival strategies. Had you ever heard of mother bears using human activity this way to help protect their cubs?
