Anyone who perceives a conflict of interest and is a councillor or mayor is morally, ethically and perhaps legally obligated to bring it to light.

"I want to talk a little bit about one of my opponents. Terri McConnachie. She's a wonderful person. But I think there is a significant issue that she hasn't addressed. First her husband Kevin McConnachie is a national representative for CUPE. CUPE is a union for the municipal employees. And the contract with these people comes up from time to time. And it requires people who are in a position to negotiate that contract. To be free from conflict of interest. Conflict of interest can be defined as a situation in which your personal interests are affected by a decision you would make as a public official. In those circumstances, you would have to withdraw from the discussion or participation in the matters relating to labor relations. In her recent appearance before the Labour Council's forum when asked what her first priority would be as mayor she indicated that her first priority would be to improve the relationship between the unionized employees and the management of the city. I wasn't aware there was a problem there. But it does betray her bias. And I think she has to indicate this publicly. She can no longer just carry on as if it doesn't exist. So I would ask Terri McConnachie to indicate how she's going to handle the fact that there's an inherent conflict of interest associated with her role as mayor and her husband's role as the National Representative for QP the employees of the city."
