Someone hopped the fence, got into the backyard, and cut out about 18 inches of copper from this air conditioner to sell for scrap. That small piece of copper just turned into a major repair and a lot of stress for the homeowner.
I really feel for my client on this one. No one expects to deal with something like this, especially in their own backyard. It is an unfortunate reminder of how desperate things have become for some people.
Least the thieves could've done as at least pumped down the unit and closed the service valves. π€ͺ
Disappointing to see, but we will get them back up and running.
If your outdoor unit is easily accessible, it may be worth thinking about some added protection.

Last summer I took these photos on a service call, and seeing them again got me thinking about how important it is to do a proper install the first time.
This system had been slowly leaking refrigerant for years. This small flare leak went unnoticed. Eventually the charge dropped low enough that the system could no longer function.
We used a DR82 refrigerant detector to pinpoint the leak. It led us right to the flare connection. The flare had not been formed correctly, and it was never properly seated. A small detail, but it cost the homeowner years of performance and efficiency.
I cut it back and re-flared the connection using a NEF6LM flaring tool, made a clean, concentric flare, extra insurance with Nylog, torqued it properly, pressure tested, pulled a deep vacuum, weighed in the charge, and brought the system back to life.
Here is the lesson:
Flares are not just βgood enoughβ connections. They must be precise. Clean copper. Proper depth. Smooth face. Correct torque. And always double-check your work before you connect a pipe. And always use the right tools!
In HVAC, small details become big problems if ignored.

Marathon HVAC officially hit the one-year mark, and it is hard to put into words how grateful I am. This first year has truly been a rollercoaster, filled with big wins, hard lessons, long days, and moments that tested resolve. Plenty of ups and downs, but every step has been worth it.
I am deeply thankful for every customer who trusted me, every supplier who answered questions, every fellow tradesperson who offered advice, and every friend and family member who supported this journey in one way or another. None of this happens alone.
This year reinforced why I started Marathon HVAC in the first place: to do honest work, take pride in quality, and build something that lasts. I am thankful for the growth, the challenges, and the lessons that will shape the years ahead.
Here is to continuing the long run.
