Lets talk SHOCK ✨

One of the most misunderstood terms in pool care.

Many people think shocking adds sanitizer to the water (which, is not entirely wrong). In reality, shock is about getting rid of used sanitizer and the contaminants it's already been fighting.

Ever walked into a public pool and been hit with a strong chemical smell?

That pool probably needs to be shocked.

Contrary to popular belief, that "chlorine smell" isn't caused by too much chlorine; it's often caused by chloramines, the byproducts created when chlorine combines with sweat, body oils, sunscreen, and other bather waste.

Shocking oxidizes the things your filter and day-to-day chlorine, bromine, or salt system struggle to remove:
✔️ Bather waste
✔️ Body oils and lotions
✔️ Sweat
✔️ Fine organic debris
✔️ Chloramines that cause odor and irritation

Think of it as a deep cleanse for your pool water. It restores clarity, improves swimmer comfort, and helps your sanitizer maintain a healthy residual more effectively.

For regular maintenance, we recommend Pure Wow Amaze Plus or Pure Wow Amaze. Their activated oxygen formula quickly oxidizes contaminants while built-in clarifiers help leave water sparkling clear.

💡 Pro Tip: Always leave your pool cover off after shocking. The oxidation process needs time to release gases and byproducts from the water. Covering the pool or spa too soon can trap them beneath the cover and reduce the effectiveness of the treatment.

A weekly shock—or a shock after heavy use—can make all the difference.

When purchasing a property with a body of water, it’s a good idea to include a clause in the Agreement of Purchase and Sale regarding the condition and operation of the pool, hot tub, or swim spa.

If the home is being bought or sold during the winter months, a wellness check can be included as part of the documentation process, or scheduled for the spring opening season once the equipment is operational. At Solar Swim, we offer wellness checks to help provide peace of mind during the transition process.
