Martha Kovack, MEd, OCT, B.A., B.Ed. is a member in good standing with the Ontario College of Teachers, and is a Practical Linguistics Certified Teacher with the Canadian Dyslexia Society. She specializes in Orton-Gillingham, Structured Language and Literacy, and Science of Reading approaches to helping children learn to read. rs and early learning professionals to help them bring evidence-based, reliable, and valid research about beginning reading instruction into practice. Martha helps teachers reach students through multisensory, playful, and uncomplicated approaches that have been demonstrated for over a century to help students with reading disabilities gain literacy skills. She has presented thousands of hours of workshops to over 30 000 teachers and parents over the past 25 years, and is renowned for her energetic, knowledgeable, and practical presentations that inspire teachers to implement what they learn with enthusiasm. After teaching Kindergarten, Primary, and Special Education in the public school system, Martha became the founder of Sound Readers®, and the author of several early literacy resources, including Crazy Cards - card games that have been praised internationally for making learning to read easier, more effective, and fun for all ages. Martha currently owns and operates Sound Readers® (Barrie ON) to disseminate information about beginning reading instruction and dyslexia. She tutors students, and consults with teachers, tutors, and families to help them help children start off on the right foot toward later reading success, and prevent children from falling farther behind. Martha uses multisensory structured language and literacy, Science of Reading, and Orton-Gillingham approaches. For sixteen years, Martha was also the Early Literacy Specialist with the Simcoe County Ontario Early Years. In this capacity, she produced a multitude of free early learning resources for teachers and parents to help them understand the many facets of early literacy right from birth, how to identify young children who may be at risk for later reading struggles, and what we can do to help all children gain the skills needed to be well prepared for success in school later on. She is currently teaching English Language Arts at Brandon University in Manitoba, and at Georgian College in Ontario. And finally, Martha is the mother of two adult boys (one with dyslexia, DLD, and ADHD) and a school-aged daughter, all of whom give her the passion she has for making learning to read easier, more effective, and fun!
