Cette illustration m’a été inspirée par la montée de l’extrême droite aux États-Unis et les conséquences dévastatrices sur les droits humains fondamentaux. Il y a à peine plus de 1 an, la court suprême des États-Unis bannissait un article, vieux de 50 ans, qui assurait aux femmes le droit à l’avortement. J’ai aussi voulu rendre hommage à l’œuvre de Roy Lichtenstein “Drowning Girl”, qui m’obsède depuis l’adolescence, ainsi qu’à Wonder Woman, ma toute première héroïne. Le logo Pepsi s’est imposé pour son symbolisme et ses couleurs à l’effigie des États-Unis. À l’origine j’avais prévu insérer le texte ci-haut à même mon illustration, comme pour l’œuvre de Lichtenstein, mais le résultat n’était pas esthétiquement convaincant. Je suis en pourparlers avec mon gars des IR 😜 pour utiliser un tag NFC qui permettrait de voir le texte sur un smartphone en l’approchant du print.

As a Canadian, it is very preoccupying to look at our southern cousins right now. Seeing the far-right conservatives in several states, passing legislation which promotes extremist policies and denies basic human rights, (who they love, who they choose to be and their reproductive choices) makes me feel like the “American Dream” has been replaced by a dystopian nightmare. This work is inspired by the, “Don't say gay” bill that was passed in Florida last year and restricts any discussion about sexual orientation and gender identity in the classroom. The far-right conservative still belive they live in the modern era Andy Warhol was fascinated about and are trying to force feed Americans with a religious rotten flavoured soup!

Being an illustrator can sometimes be almost as stressful as being an er nurse. 😜 Drawing on a screen allows you to erase and modify as long as you want… It’s an awesome power for an artist but beware of not getting stuck in an infinite loop of dissatisfaction and perfectionism! 🤦🏻‍♂️

À la base, j’avais développé cette série avec l’intention de créer des paires de supers héros. Avec toutes les idées que j’ai en tête, je ne sais pas si je compléterai ou non tous ceux prévues, mais She-Ra et He-Man sont maintenant réunis!

Both characters under He-Man and She-Ra masks are monsters from horror comedy which make the pair even more cohesive I think. I loved Critters movies as a kid. Horror-comedy movies are not that popular nowadays, do you miss that?

Astro le petit robot, l’un des premiers dessins animés et des premiers supers héros qu’il m’a été donné de voir étant enfant. Ma mère m’avait même abonné à un fan club! 😆Chucky, définitivement un de mes coups de cœur du cinéma d’horreur!
