Tony Rayns, who recognized the value of Korean and Asian cinema ahead of his time and helped bring it to the world, passed away today. May he rest in peace.

Call for Essays is expanding across Canada!
Tonight marks the official close of our first round focused on Montreal. We have been so inspired by the response—and by the direct demand from arts enthusiasts in other cities—that we are thrilled to expand our second call nationwide. Thank you all!
Eligibility: AAPLab, in partnership with the 13th Montréal Asian International Film Festival (MAiFF), invites writers, artists, and researchers from coast to coast to reflect on Asian film and media events attended anywhere in Canada between January 1 and September 30, 2026.
We are looking for critical, creative writing that actively decolonizes how we perceive, interact with, and experience Asian cultures:
- How do these arts events shift the dynamics and relationships between immigrants, locals, and different communities?
- How do they reshape the reception of Asians in Canada, and how does that ripple out into our everyday lives?
Ultimately, we want to explore how the Asian diaspora and pan-Asian arts disrupt old stereotypes, bringing rich, diverse perspectives that fundamentally change how we see, understand, and live alongside our diverse Canadian neighbours.
The next submission window opens tomorrow, July 1st (Canada Day) and runs through September. More details are coming soon.
Wishing you all a thoughtful and happy July 1st!
