Haskap Picking Tips!

A few quick tips before you head out to the field:

• Park on the grass on the right side of the driveway
• Grab your baskets from the shack
• Follow the signs out to the haskaps. You’ll pass the chicken coop and the cows along the way. The cows may judge your berry-picking technique, but don’t worry, they can be paid off with grass.

The smaller bushes are the first ones ready. It might be tempting to sprint straight to the big bushes, but they’re still ripening.

When picking, ripe berries should come off the branch easily. Give a few a taste and check the inside. They should be purple all the way through. If they’re still green inside, they’re not quite ready and will be more sour than sweet.

And lastly, please be careful of the strawberry row. We know it looks like the fastest route, but the strawberries are still growing.

Baby chick report - already NOT fluffy!

At a week old, these guys have lost their fluff and start to grow in their feathers - which means they get to go outside and enjoy the grass!

Next week we pick up another 100 little fluffs, and once you see them side by side you’ll agree they don’t stay cute for long.

A little purple is showing up!

After watching the berries show up, the haskaps are starting to turn. Warm sunshine and a few more hot days will have more of them blushing purple, but don’t let the colour fool you just yet - we are still a bit away from picking!

Once they turn purple, they still need a few days to fully ripen and develop that sweet-tart flavour you love.

For now, we’re enjoying the first signs that harvest season is getting closer.
