This beautiful piece of artwork by Chief Lady Bird Art perfectly captures both and . While they are two distinct and important observances, for many Indigenous Two-Spirit and 2SLGBTQ+ people, these aren't two separate conversations. If you've ever wondered what intersectionality looks like, this is it!

There are so many ways to honour and support both this month:
📅 Attend local events
📚 Read a book
🎬 Watch a film or series
🛍️ Support Indigenous and 2SLGBTQ+ owned businesses
📲 Follow and amplify Indigenous and 2SLGBTQ+ voices

The standing ovation goes to Kuldeep Ahluwalia who had the bravery, strength and fortitude to not give up the fight that will pave the way for many women and girls who will surely come after her in seeking justice 💜

We are so pleased to introduce you to Brooklyn Nicholson, Maple Ridge's 2026 Youth Citizen of the Year, awarded by the Maple Ridge Community Foundation, who donated her entire $1,000 prize to Cythera 🤩

Brooklyn, you are exactly the kind of leader this community needs and we are so honoured to have your support 💜

"Throughout my years in leadership at Westview Secondary, I have had the opportunity to raise money and support local organizations. This year I chose Cythera Anti-Violence Society, which enabled me to put together personal care packages for women and children. After seeing what I was able to accomplish and understanding the important work Cythera does to support vulnerable individuals, I made a commitment to myself to continue to raise money and awareness for this important community resource. From my research and connecting with the amazing Cythera staff, I learned what specific items they require to help women in need. When I won the Youth Citizen of the Year award, I knew I wanted to donate the $2500 I was given to Cythera on behalf of the Maple Ridge Community Foundation. As youth, it can be easy to get discouraged or overwhelmed trying to change societal or global issues that apply in our community. But taking just one step to reach out to local organizations, or volunteering through schools or sports organizations, can have a profound impact. I truly believe we are a generation filled with the strive and innovation to implement change, as I have both experienced and witnessed firsthand. I have always been motivated and inspired to run fundraisers or volunteer, with the goal of being part of something bigger and being part of change. Winning this award is a tremendous honour, and I really hope it reiterates to youth in Maple Ridge what a difference you can make, and the importance of recognizing community need, evaluating what you can do to help, and then taking action."

Be sure to register for this one - May 14th is the day! This BC-born, Indigenous-led movement started when Paul LaCerte and his daughter Raven were out hunting moose along the Highway of Tears and felt called to bring men and boys into the conversation around ending violence against women and children. What began as a deeply personal act has grown into a nationwide movement with over 300,000 Canadians joining in ceremony and solidarity each year.

There is a full day of events, workshops, and ceremony planned, including a virtual livestream, community gatherings, and an optional fast with a closing ceremony. Head to the link in their post to register, and while you're there give them a like and a follow 🙏
