A PRAYER FOR THE OVERWHELMED

Oh, sweetheart,
life can feel overwhelming at times, I know.

Do not listen to the ones who call you over-sensitive or too weak for this world.
Your sensitivity is exquisitely beautiful.

But you must learn to stay close to yourself.
You must learn to breathe.
To invite gentle, curious attention deep into your body.

Allow yourself to feel overwhelmed,
and you will not be overwhelmed, I promise.
It is just a feeling.
A precious part of you longing for love.
It will pass when it is ready.
Let it stay awhile.

Do not pretend to be strong, the one who has it all figured out.
There will be time for answers soon enough.

For now, simply give the overwhelmed one safe passage in your heart.
Drench the feeling of overwhelm with gentle attention.
Bathe it in love.

It is okay to feel overwhelmed sometimes, it truly is.
Even the strongest feel overwhelmed, for their strength lies in their vulnerability.

Your sensitive nervous system is perfect, and I love you for it.

And it is all okay, here.
It is really okay, here in the arms
of the present moment.

The following documentary is filmed in the United States.
However homelessness knows no boundaries.
Here in Canada in every major city there exists homeless camps that are regularly torn down and disposed of and where those people are to go?
No one knows.

I hope the next time you drive by a homeless camp and feel resentment that your resentment is towards our government officials.
I hope the next time you see a homeless person and you feel fear that your fear is for yourself and your loved ones because statistics show that over 90% of our population is two paychecks away from finding themselves also homeless.

So many people, because of fear, label the homeless as addicts and sadly, deserving of their plight.
It is our way of comforting ourselves, convincing ourselves that this could not happen to us.
To realize that many of the “new homeless” are seniors or families that have been pushed out of their housing because of rising rents or lost their jobs because of layoffs and then lost their homes.
Many who are addicts, became addicts because of their hopeless situation.

I’m sorry to be blowing the horn of homelessness especially when I don’t have an answer for the situation.
I do know this.
That the answer to every question is LOVE.

If every time you drive by a homeless camp or see another homeless person pushing their cart, if you could say a little prayer and send them some love energy, envision them safely and joyously settled into a home that goes a long way towards change.
Thoughts and emotions carry an energy that either heals or harms.
If every day we made the choice to do one small thing for even one person who is in need.
A friend bought up a whole wack of winter gloves and gives them out to the homeless.
Another friend puts together food hampers at Christmas for families needing help.
Another friend, every single day gives a meal to someone on the street.
Another friend makes eye contact with the homeless they meet along their walk and says a little prayer as they pass each other.
It might not make a difference to the whole world …but it makes a whole world of difference to someone feeling alone and unloved.

What we resist persists.
So we need to NOT fight “against” homelessness…we need instead fight FOR homes.
