The Melungeons were known for keeping their cabins and farms deliberately blended into the terrain. They built their homes out of logs that were left unhewn or chinked with local mud to match the exact color of the surrounding trees and bark. This natural camouflage helped entire communities remain largely invisible to tax collectors, land speculators, and census takers who navigated the ridgelines above.
