Bimaajitoon Search & Rescue

This coming Thursday (July 16th) our team and Wasauksing First Nation Fire Department will be conducting a training exercise in the form of a scenario in the area of Depot Harbour. These joint training sessions are held to allow both organizations to learn how each other operates ahead of a real response. The scenario will run within the timeframe of 6:00pm-10:00pm.

There will be an increased presence of emergency services and vehicles in the area, although this is strictly a mock scenario. Any questions can be directed to the command section during this time. Thank you in advance for your cooperation.

*UPDATE: All members have been stood down and have returned home. Thanks to North Shore Search and Rescue for the continued partnership.

*UPDATE: Members are on site and completing search patterns with units from Greater Sudbury Police Service.

Members are currently responding to a mutual aid callout to assist our partners North Shore Search And Rescue in the Worthington area (west of Sudbury) for a missing person search.

Are they testing the wind direction? Showing their prediction for the Blue Jays this season? Neither…

Prior to operations (training or real) our teams work through a risk assessment which aims to review different aspects of the callout. These range from complexity of the task to environmental factors like weather. This also includes the team’s preparedness. Our Safety Officer verbalizes each aspect and members hold up their score in the air (the lower the score the better).

If the risk score is higher, we would work to mitigate as much risk as we can or adjust the plans. The safety of our team is our top priority so we can effectively assist others.

Students learned what to do to prevent getting lost and what to do if they become lost. Our AdventureSmart presenters also had different stations for students to rotate through covering our team equipment and trip essentials.
