Having AI delete your entire database and backups would be a nightmare. Work smart with AI. Donât let this happen to your business.
Knowing that we have guardrails in place gives me comfort. However, we should never let our vigilance drop or lessen. Technology is escalating at an incredible rate. Review of guardrails, policies and procedures must also be ongoing and adapting with new technology. You may have encryption keys in place but have they been updated to modern keys and methods?
Some pointers from our team on keeping safe while using AI coding:

AI is powerful but risky without guardrails
AI can generate validâlooking code very fast, including destructive commands. Good coding and bad coding take the same amount of time.

Never give AI direct access to production
Coding should always happen in a dev environment, never live systems.

Strong separation between dev, staging, and prod
If AI only has access to dev environments, the worstâcase failure is inconvenience, not downtime.

Leastâprivilege access at all times
AI (and applications) shouldnât have admin or delete rights. If it canât run DROP, it canât cause catastrophic loss.

Immutable, offâaccount backups are nonânegotiable
Backups should be writeâonce and stored separately so even an admin, or AI, canât erase history.

Deletion protection and approval gates
Require extra approvals for destructive actions like schema changes, retention reductions, or infrastructure deletes.

AI proposes; humans and CI/CD decide and test
Use pull requests, automated checks, and human reviews so AI output is evaluated before it impacts systems.

Logs, alerts, and restore drills finish the job
Monitor for destructive actions and regularly test restores. A backup you havenât restored doesnât count.
AI should increase confidence, not anxiety. Guardrails turn AI from a risk into a competitive advantage.
