Good training sessions aren't long or intense.
They're short, focused, and built around one clear skill at a time. When teaching something new, we lower distractions and make it easy for the dog to succeed.
When we overdo it, dogs start to lose focus.
Frustration builds. Responses get slower. Mistakes increase. At that point, we're no longer building understanding - we're practicing confusion.
Ending the session while your dog is still successful matters.
When sessions consistently end on a win, your dog associates training with clarity and success - and they're far more likely to engage willingly the next time.

If your dog listens perfectly at home but struggles outside, it usually comes down to one thing - the 3 D's.
Distance.
Duration.
Distraction.
These are the three variables that determine how reliable a behaviour really is.
Distance - How far you are from your dog when you give the cue.
Can they hold a sit when you're one step away?
What about across the yard?
Duration - How long they can maintain the behaviour.
A two-second sit is very different from a two-minute sit.
Distraction - What's happening around them.
It's much easier to focus in your living room than on a busy pathway with dogs, people, smells, and movement.
Reliability isn't automatic. It's built by gradually increasing one of these at a time — not all three at once.
When behaviours fall apart, it usually means one of the D's was increased too quickly.
