The Ermineskin Cree Nation is set to begin the process of electing its next Chief.

In the lead up to the vote, an official nomination meeting will be held on July 29 at Neywaskewyahk Okimaw Kamik (Ermineskin Community Hall) to give the Nation's members a chance to put forth names of candidates who seek to become Chief.

On August 3, the Ermineskin Cree Nation's administration will host an open forum to allow candidates for the position of Chief to speak directly to Nation membership, discuss why they should take on the role, and answer questions from the public. Election Day will be held two days following the forum on August 5, with polls opening starting at 9:00 a.m. and closing at 6:00 p.m.

"The time has come for members of Ermineskin Cree Nation to help shape the future of our Nation," reads a statement. "Together, we can continue building a future that honours our traditions, supports our members, and strengthens our Nation for generations to come."

The Battle River Watershed Alliance is mourning the loss of long-time member Lorne Ferguson.

Ferguson served the organization as a board member and treasurer from 2012 through 2022 and passed away following a short illness on June 19, 2026, at the age of 78. In a statement posted to social media, the BRWA said that he was known for his commitment to helping preserve the river through tireless environmental stewardship.

"He cared deeply for our watersheds and shared our vision of caring for the land, water, and biodiversity to support strong and sustainable communities," said the BRWA. "His stewardship was evident not only through his service with the Battle River Watershed Alliance, but also through his dedication to Friends of Little Beaver Lake and the Camrose Fish and Game Association."

A little bit of Alberta history. A 1929 Nitro Glycerine truck ...used to blow up stubborn oil drill holes. Just a tad dangerous and highly unstable. Thank you to the pioneers of Black Gold. Shane

This year's community-wide garage sale in Ponoka is set for July 17 to 19.

The annual town-wide event serves as an opportunity for residents to sell unwanted items and explore local treasures. Residents can participate by hosting a garage or yard sale during the designated weekend. Although the event will take place from Friday, July 17, to Sunday, July 19, participating residents will be able to choose to set up garage or yard sales on one, two, or all three days as preferred.

As in years past, the Town of Ponoka says that they are once again putting together an online map of all participating residents for this year's event. To enter your garage or yard sale onto the map, you're asked to fill out an entry form on the town's website or call 403-783-0131. You'll be asked to provide your first and last name, physical address, and the dates and times of your garage sale before the end of the day on Sunday, July 12.
