💡 Tip Of The Day!
🐴 If your horse is chewing on things they shouldn’t, start by checking their routine.
Pica (eating non-food items like dirt, wood, or bedding) is often a sign of an underlying issue, not just a bad habit.
To combat this:
👉 Check your horse's forage intake as limited access can increase risk
👉 Review your diet is ensure it is balance and provides adequate salt and minerals
👉 Look at management factors like boredom, stress, or long period without feed
🌿 Horses are designed to graze for most of the day, when that pattern is distributed, abnormal behaviours can develop.
Address the root cause, not just stopping the behaviour.

🩺 The Vet’s Scoop 🐴✨
📣 This week’s highlight: Forage Access
“Horses spend most of their day eating. Free-ranging horses typically graze for 14–18 hours per day, making forage access a key component of equine welfare.”
~ Dr. Fran Rowe, DVM, Veterinary Nutritionist
A horse’s digestive system is designed for a near-constant intake of fiber. Consistent access to forage helps support healthy digestion, normal gut motility, and a stable hindgut microbiome, while also encouraging natural feeding behaviors. Management practices that extend forage availability can help reduce boredom and support both physical and behavioral well-being.
