XDM Boot Camp | English Language and Literature 09/01/2021

The Critical Media Lab is pleased to announce the return of its live and in-person XDM boot camp at the Communitech Hub.

This event is open to any English grad student who is interested in learning about critical design -- with or without digital media. No skills in coding or circuit-bending are required. The boot camp will introduce participants to various methodologies (critical making, speculative design, applied media theory), which will be applied to the creation of a smartly critical and anti-pandemically FUN object-to-think-with.

Register today for the emerging Digital Scholars Lecture series, Thursdays @ 4 pm. November 19 is Waterloo English's own Lillian Black, followed by Alexander Fleck on December 3.

This series is organized by Dr. Paul Barrett from the University of Guelph, Dr. Lai-Tze Fan from the University of Waterloo's Critical Media Lab, and Andrea Zeffiro, Academic Director of the Sherman Centre for Digital Scholarship.

An Evening with Jaron Lanier | Waterloo Events 03/29/2019

The CML is pleased to co-host an evening with JARON LANIER at the CIGI Auditorium in Waterloo. Lanier is best known for his pioneering work in Virtual Reality, but what makes him unique is his critical thinking about technology and culture. His book You Are Not a Gadget, for example, calls for a technocultural future that fosters a "deepening of meaning" rather than "wave after wave of juvenilia." Lanier is also a musician, and he plans to showcase this talent at the event.
